The Digital Smiley Face Turns 25

The computer smiley face is celebrating a birthday this week.

It was 25 years ago that a professor at Carnegie Mellon University in the United States placed a colon, a hyphen and a parenthesis together to make a horizontal smiley face.

Since that time, the well-known emoticon has appeared in millions of emails and other electronic messages.
