Fifty Years After Sputnik

The Soviet Union launched the first satellite to orbit around the Earth on October 4, 1957.

The satellite was called Sputnik. It started a race into space between the Soviet Union and the United States.

Sputnik stayed in space for 96 days and orbited around the Earth 1,440 times.
