The gap between the rich and the poor in the United States has grown in the past year.

According to a report in The Wall Street Journal, the wealthiest 1 percent of Americans earned 21.2 percent of the country's wealth.

The bottom 50 percent, on the other hand, earn just 12.8 percent of the country's overall wealth.

One reason experts have given for the bigger difference in earnings is the increased importance of technical skills.
