Nova, Japan's largest chain of language schools, has closed.
The company has filed for bankruptcy.
Nova has 450,000 students who learn at more than 1,000 schools across Japan. It employs 5,000 people.
Foreign teachers from Britain, Australia, Canada and the United States are now without jobs and may have to return home.
Employees at Nova have not been paid in six weeks.
