A Mideast Summit Has Opened in Maryland

Officials from 40 nations are gathering in the United States this week for a conference on the Middle East.

The officials at the summit will discuss a Palestinian state.

"We've come together this week because we share a common goal -- two democratic states, Israel and Palestine, living side by side in peace and security," said President George W. Bush.

There will also be meetings about peace between Israel and Syria.
