A New Creature Is Revealed

In modern times, as people travel to all parts of the world, it is quite unusual to discover an animal which nobody knew about before.

Nevertheless, in January 2008, zoologists, the scientists who study and classify animals, announced that they had found a new member of the elephant shrew family in Tanzania.

With a weight of just over three kilograms, it is 25 percent larger than any other elephant shrew - or the size of a cat..

This is the first new elephant shrew to be identified in 126 years.

"From the moment I first lifted one of the animals into our photography tent, I knew it must be a new species-not just because of its distinct coloring, but because it was so heavy!" said Dr. Galen Rathbun, who studied the animal.
