The province of Kosovo declared its independence from Serbia on Sunday.

The United States and many European countries supported Kosovo's decision to become an "independent and democratic state."

Russia and Serbia, however, said the decision would make it possible for several other provinces to declare independence in other parts of the world.

Crowds celebrated throughout the day in Kosovo's capital of Pristina.
