BUSINESS
The Energetic Entrepreneur
Listen here
There is rarely a quiet or a
dull
moment in Sir Richard Branson's life.
Branson is the founder of Virgin Group Ltd, a
conglomeration
of over 200 separately run companies.
With his long hair and beard, Branson is one of the most recognizable figures in British business.
Branson, who was born in London in 1950, started his first business - a magazine for students - at the age of 16.
In 1970, he formed a music business in London. Three years later, Mike Oldfield, the first musician who recorded with Virgin Music, sold five million copies of his album "Tubular Bells".
In 1984, Branson started Virgin Atlantic Airlines, which is now the second largest long-haul international airline in Britain.
In September 2004, this
tireless
businessman launched Virgin Galactic, a company that will let anybody who pays $200,000 travel into space.
Today, Virgin companies can be found in over 30 countries and are involved in such industries as mobile, finance, retail, internet, drinks, rail, hotels and leisure.
However, Branson is more than just a businessman. He is also an adventurer. For example, he is an
accomplished
hot-air balloonist.
In 1986, he set the record for the fastest time for sailing across the Atlantic.
As for his humanitarian side, Branson is involved with several charitable organizations which promote world peace and improve health care.
Branson, who lives in Surrey, England, is married with two children.
