The Two Budweisers

Listen here

The battle between two beers named Budweiser has been going on for over 100 years.

One Budweiser belongs to a brewery in the Czech Republic, the other is in the United States.

The history of the Czech beer goes back as far as the 13th century. The American Budweiser, which is the most popular beer in the United States, was first brewed in 1876.

Because both companies have trademarks for the name Budweiser, their beers are sold by different names - depending on the country. For example, the American beer is called "Bud" in France.

This month, InBev, a Belgian brewery, announced that it wants to buy Anheuser-Busch, the company which makes the American Budweiser.

Words

brewery: a company which makes beer.

to brew: to make beer.

trademark: the officially registered name of a product which belongs to a particular company.
