The next vice president of the United States could be a woman who was the mayor of a small Alaskan town of 7,000 people a few years ago.

Sarah Palin was nominated by Republican John McCain on August 29 to be his running mate in the November presidential election.

McCain's surprise choice has helped improve his popularity with the American people. The race for president is very close. Two weeks ago, Democrat Barack Obama was in the lead.

Palin became the governor of Alaska in 2006.
